Bangladesh University (BU) held its 2nd Convocation on 27 December, 2017 (Wednesday) at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC), Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid, MP, Honorable Minister for Education, as the representative of the Honorable President of Bangladesh and Chancellor of Bangladesh University Mr. Mohammad Abdul Hamid presided over the Convocation. Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, MP, Dhaka-13 was present as Special Guest. Professor, Emeritus, Department of History, and Ex. Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University Dr. Alamgir Mohammad Serajuddin was the Convocation Speaker. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Anwarul Haque Sharif delivered the welcome addresses while the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Bangladesh University delivered vote of thanks.
Honorable Education Minister conferred degrees upon 4804 graduates of three faculties.
Honorable Education Minister expressed satisfaction with the standard of modern technology based education BU imparts to its students and hopes it would be a role model for private universities in future if it continues its efforts in this way. He mentions, he finds no difference between the students of Private and Public Universities. They are all our sons and future of our nation, he added. He reassures the commitment of Govt. to enhance the standard of education at all levels and to create the opportunity for all irrespective of class and sects.
He speaks, the government wants to ensure quality education to face the challenges of the 21st century. But a few private universities fail to fulfill the minimum requirements needed for running a university: they will not be able to continue it for an unlimited time. They have to face the consequence who are running more than one campus and did not shift their academic activities at the permanent campus as yet. It is not fair to run a university aiming at personal gain and not to comply with the instruction of government, he added.
The Speakers of program advise the graduates to take lessons from the history to avoid any kind of mistake and to pay the legacy back to the nation. They must have to be human being first and then devote them to do good for the community, society and nation as well.
1225 students were conferred degrees in the 1st Convocation. In the 2nd Convocation 4804 graduates from three faculties were conferred degrees. Among them, 1908 are from the faculty of Business and Economics, 1477 are from Science, Engineering & Technology and 1419 from Arts, Social Science & Law.
19 graduates are awarded Gold Medals for their outstanding feat in their academic performance. Rizwana Edris Jyoti becomes the Valedictorian and was awarded Chancellor Gold Medal. One received the Quazi Azher Ali Gold Medal, 4 Vice Chancellor Gold Medal and 13 Dean Gold Medal.
Bangladesh University set out its dream journey in 2001. It was founded by the eminent educationist, Former Secretary Quazi Azher Ali. Bangladesh University has got its own campus at the heart of the metropolis at Iqbal Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. So for more than 6 (Six) thousand have graduated from this university and more than 5800 students are studying in 10 departments under 3 faculties.
BU carries many research works and studies. BU Urban Lab, the 1st Urban Lab in the country, earns reputation by carrying out two important research studies. One on the Impact of Air Pollution in Dhaka city on Human Health and another on Sustainable Low Cost Housing for Garment Sector Workers. This Urban Lab Also launched 2 apps. Nagar app for providing rapid and ready service to the people of DNCC and e-Heart app for the Heart disease patients. BU Innovation Lab, the 1st Innovation Lab in Bangladesh, has already started innovative work on robotics. The students of BU are engaged in research works along with their formal education inside the four walls of the classroom.
