Message from the Advisor of Dept. of English
Last October, I assumed with great honor the post of Advsior of the Department of English at Bangladesh University. Ever since then, I have been working patiently to constitute the Department on par with other top universities. My advice has been accepted by the Department with enthusiasm and support.
I feel extremely proud to be a part of the winning team at the Department of English. We, at the Department, have undertaken the task of upgrading ourselves to meet the demands of the new millennium. We are committed to developing and supporting a new generation of academic leadership in the department, the university, and the profession. We are also committed to recognizing important research projects, contributions in teaching, and developing the quality of learning in the department. The mentorship of young teachers has been one of our foremost concerns and greatest achievements.
At the Department of English of Bangladesh University, we believe that education is not only about following a fixed curriculum; it is rather a blend of academic excellence with Co-curricular activities. Keeping this in mind, our graduates, in addition to academic performance, have also been encouraged to participate in sports and debate at the National level, at which they have also excelled. Apart from the prescribing texts, we are also trying to include fostering of skills like personal development, collaboration, critical thinking, effective communication, creative and imaginative approaches to problem solving to ensure a well-rounded education. All these skills are embedded in the curriculum and will continue to be used in various configurations to ensure maximum effective learning of the students, based on the projected outcomes of the courses.
To make the curriculum even more inclusive and relevant, we plan to revamp the program throughout the next year. We have been working relentlessly to improve the quality of our programmes. In the coming years, we intend to focus on expanding our course offerings to include English for Employability, ESP/EAP courses, modern courses in English literature from post-colonial paradigm, courses on semiotics, discourse, politics and identity. In addition to this, we are also planning to offer a new MA in TESOL programme to ensure better placement of our graduates. We believe that the study of language and literature liberates us and gives us insights into the mindset of the rapidly evolving millennial. The greatest strengths of the Department of English at BU are the dedicated team of teachers, unique curriculum and a constant follow up and monitoring system to improve and upgrade the existing one. Apart from that, we also give students numerous opportunities for hands-on learning through practice oriented activities, demonstration and research projects.
Together, we are committed to nourishing our dreams in the years to come.
