Economic Impact of Reducing Conjunction in Dhaka City
Key findings and initiatives announced by Urban Lab:
- Removal of illegal bus and truck stands by the Mayor in 9 points resulted in savings of 1000+cr/yr
- PM 2.5 Air Pollution level in many areas is over 200. This level is classified as “Very Unhealthy” per international standards and can cause respiratory illness
- Noise level is many areas is over 85. This level of noise can cause hearing impairment as well as other health issues
- Urban lab will launch a mobile education initiative called “School in a Bus” which will focus on education of underprivileged children
- Urban lab is researching low-cost housing options for industrial workers
- Urban lab is working on creating a new vision for sustainable Dhaka by restoring the natural water channels
Honorable MP Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak described various development work undertaken in Mohammadpur area, including removal of illegal bus stands. He also highlighted the need to free Basila river from illegal occupation as well as create a water park there.
Honorable Mayor Mr Annisul Huq mentioned the following points:
- All DNCC roads will be made hawker-free by April. Hawkers will be rehabilitated in appropriate locations
- WASA should be placed under the control of the 2 mayors for efficient solution of the city’s water-logging problem
- 3000 new buses, including 1000 air-conditioned buses, will be introduced in the near future
- 190 bus owners have been organized in 5 groups for efficient operation of the bus routes and for avoidance of unhealthy competition for passengers
- 20,000 billboards have been removed. A limited number of billboards will be allowed in a planned way
- 1000 volunteers will be working on the “Green Dhaka” initiative to create an environmental-friendly city
