About the Department of Sociology

At Bangladesh University, the Department of Sociology has given the university a greater standing as an institution committed to a Liberal Arts education. The core team recognizes that there exists a niche in Bangladesh for a state of the art Sociology Department that will deal with issues of national and transnational significance. To that end, the Department of sociology of Bangladesh University has the potential to become not only the leading sociology department in the country, but also in south Asia. It focuses on a complete education by training the students beyond the skills needed to perform in the job market. Sociology related education seeks to create a socially responsible person, endowing the student with the knowledge necessary to go about in the world. It allows one to know one’s culture, society and civilization as it enriches the soul and enhances humanity through the learning of the arts, history, music, literature, science, and philosophy.

 

Sociology department have dynamic faculty members from home and abroad that teach and are engaged in critically researching social and cultural issues of current relevance. It has initiate regional and global links to key academic and research institutions to jointly address cutting edge global concerns on the historical, political and economic spheres that construct our identity and society; and thereby it operates as a regional convening platform on these issues.

 

The goal of the department is to provide an excellent broad based education with a focus on professional development for students, in order to equip them with the knowledge and skill necessary for leading the country in its quest for development. Along with this, the department provides an environment for faculty development in order to ensure a dynamic teaching environment. Faculty will be provided with an environment in which they can further their teaching skills and contribute to the creation of new knowledge by developing and using their research skills.
