Historical Background
Bangladesh University (BU) was established in 2001 under Private University Act, 1992 by Mr. Quazi Azher Ali as a non-profit, non-political private university pioneering in computer-based education. It has been accredited by the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and its curricula as well as programs have been approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. BU is approved by the Government of Bangladesh for awarding degrees in various disciplines. We are committed to excellence and innovation in pursuing applied knowledge through research and creative activities with the objectives of producing world-class professionals responsive to the need of the Bangladeshi community and world at large.
Since our establishment in 2001 when we started with 17 students and 0.02 acres of space, BU has grown to 5784 students with three campuses. With 127 full-time and 27 part-time faculty members and 101 administrative members, our community continues to grow to cater to the needs of both the students and the economy.
Founder Vice-Chancellor:
The President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the Chancellor of Bangladesh University (BU), appointed Mr. Quazi Azhar Ali, M.Sc (DU), MPA (Harvard) as the Founder Vice Chancellor. Mr. Quazi Azher Ali's excellent academic background, contribution in academic and literary fields, rich experiences in public administration as Secretary of six Ministries including the Education Ministry, Executive Director of Asian Development Bank and his reputation in Govt. services & international organizations makes him the ideal and highly qualified candidate. Mr. Ali agreed to accept taka one per month as salary to help considering the initial financial problems for a new noncommercial institution.
